Alumni Spotlight: Amy Posner

The first in our Alumni Spotlight series is CBE 2009 graduate Amy “The” Posner (aka Scrubbing Bubbles, Best Social Chair Ever). Though originally from Columbia, SC, she says she wants to stay in the Northeast indefinitely. She pledged as part of the Gamma class while the chapter was still a colony. She studied Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, focusing in Environmental Engineering, with an almost-minor in history. During her time at Penn, she was involved in Hexagon, AIChE, was an OPA! for three years, and she served as Social Chair for Theta Tau in 2008. She says her favorite part about Theta Tau is the people. “I have some amazing memories of hanging out with my bros, and they’re some of my best friends,” she says, “Also, I really love finding words with OT in them– pOTato, tater tOT, hOT pocket…” Since graduating last May, she secured an internship in Washington, DC with the Environmental Protection Agency. As an ORISE Fellow, she develops different policies and voluntary programs, as well as simulating emergency situations, in order to train wastewater and drinking water utilities to respond to an actual emergency. Professionally, she would like to stay in the environmental engineering sector to focus on renewable resources or climate change, though not necessarily through the government. In her free time, she says she enjoys keeping up with the latest pop music, saying lame things then laughing, thinking up new ideas for theme parties, trying to like yoga, and traveling – even if that means exploring the city in which she currently resides. Just recently, Amy traveled to India for two weeks to attend the second part of her sister’s wedding. She spent her time sight-seeing, eating delicious food, and purchasing inexpensive souvenirs. Currently, she says she is saving up her income to go traveling in southeast Asia or South America after her internship is over in November. Back here at Tau Gamma, we all wish her the very best!

Brother Spotlight: Adrienne Arndt

The first in our spotlight series of current brothers and alumni is none other than the new Regent, Adrienne Arndt (aka Spark Plug, Sparky, Sex-in-the-Parky, AIDS, and Spanky). Tau Gamma’s first female regent grew up outside Philadelphia in Delaware County. Originally rushing in the fall of her freshman year before being turned away, she pledged as part of the Epsilon class in the Fall of 2008. She served as treasurer on last year’s board before being elected to serve as Regent for 2010. She is currently a junior studying Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, with a minor in math. Adrienne is very involved in SEAS, participating in Advancing Women in Engineering, Society of Women Engineers, and Orientation Peer Advising. She worked as a research assistant in the Haptics Group Lab, and she is currently a Teaching Assistant for MEAM101. During this past summer, Adrienne spent six weeks in Ireland working at an internship, taking a programming class, and traveling around Europe. The experience was so moving that she plans on traveling more in the future, and possibly working abroad in Australia this summer. When asked what her favorite thing about Theta Tau was, she said it was the sense of brotherhood and community. “I always hoped I’d meet people in college that I’d be close with for the rest of my life,” she said, “OT not only makes me feel like I’m invested in Penn and I have a reason to come back after I graduate, but also that I’ve met people I’ll be telling my kids about someday.”

Rush Begins!

It’s that time of year again! The Rush and Recruitment committee has put together a great rush schedule. Open rush will be going on until the end of the week, with a new “S’mores” event taking place on Thursday evening. Pizza with the Brothers on Monday was a big success with a record-breaking 60 rushes! Click here for the facebook event, or see below for the full open rush schedule.
